Background Information

  • In the country of Afghanistan women are expected to be submissive. They are expected to keep themselves completely covered. They are not allowed to be out in public without the company of a male relative. They are expected to be housewives, there is no oppurtunity for outside work or even education. It is not uncommon for a woman to be raped and murdered in broad daylight. These women are constantly taken advantage of and are victims. Many women in Afghanistan are driven to suicide due to the unbearable conditions they are forced to live under. Even with the fall of the Taliban, women in Afghanistan still live with the same fears that have haunted them for so many years.

Afghan Women

Afghanistan (which means Land of the Afghan) is a mountainious land-locked country in Central Asia. The estimated population of this country is currently between 21 and 26 million.
 
 
 Kabul is the capitol of Afghanistan and was once a great city which has since been nearly destroyed by years and years of war.
 
  • The economy of Afghanistan is in ruins and the environment is in crisis due to the years of war. Along with being economically instable, Afghanistan also experiances political instability. It is one of the world's poorest countries.
  • Even though the country of Afghanistan struggles greatly, they are rich in natural reasources. They have abundant supplies of natural gas and mineral and precious stone deposits. In addition, they prosper agriculturally. Some crops that they are able to produce in Afghanistan are corn, rice, barely, wheat, fruits, and nuts. The major industrial crops of Afghanistan are cotton, tobacco, sugar beets, and castor beans.
